In many cases, home and business owners are well aware that a building is suffering from water damage, usually after periods of intense rain or a similar natural disaster. Unfortunately, water damage is not always so obvious, a fact that can exacerbate structural and health issues which, under ideal circumstances, should be addressed as soon as possible.
An unusually high water bill is one of the most common indicators of unseen water damage. Water charges that cannot be accounted for are usually the result of one or more leaks somewhere in the plumbing system. Large buildings, as well as small homes, have plenty of spaces where water damage from a leaking pipe can accumulate for long periods of time without being detected, especially basements or crawl spaces.
Homeowners with wood floors may notice individual planks beginning to bend and warp, another sign of underlying water damage. This damage may be the result of something as simple as a leaking dishwasher. In more severe cases, a building’s foundation can absorb enough ground water to push moisture up through the structure until it ultimately meets the wood flooring. Individuals who do not act quick enough may need to completely replace all compromised structures. Peeling or bubbling paint can provide a similar warning sign in walls and ceilings.
A pervasive musty odor is another sign of water damage, particularly in sub-level sections of a building. The unmistakable odor is the result of accumulated moisture in the nearby area, which should be located and its cause addressed as soon as possible. Lastly, the buildup of mold spores is likely related to a moisture issue. Fortunately, the presence of mold does not always indicate extreme amounts of moisture, meaning home and building owners may still have time to intervene before serious structural damage has been done.
